Hurricane Ike

Again, here I am apologizing for not posting on a regular basis. Obviously, I'm not a master blogger like most of you, but will write when I have what I would consider a newsworthy item.

I moved to South Texas only four and one-half months ago knowing that I was moving into an area that can experience hurricanes. However, no large hurricane has come this way in many years and, besides, I felt like I had developed an immunity to them. We lived in the Corpus Christi area for two years....no hurricane. We also lived in New Orleans for two years....no hurricane. Who would have thought that we could live here less than six months and experience Hurricane Ike???

I must admit that before the winds got bad on Friday afternoon that I was kind of looking forward to having the "experience". Didn't want any damage, and felt for those who might actually be in harms way, but just to be able to experience something as powerful as a hurricane. And it all began just as I had hoped. We moved all outside furniture, plants and lawn ornaments inside, got the windows ready (well kind of...no board, just tape), bought comfort food and water (yes, threw away any guilt about dieting), picked up batteries for the flashlights and portable radio and filled two bathtubs with water. Oh yes, washed my hair for the second time that afternoon in case the electricity went out and I couldn't wash it on Saturday. Prepared???? Mr. Forbes from the Weather Channel couldn't have been better prepared than us.

Next came the waiting game. We watched the TV and almost lost hope of it actually beginning. Then, the winds picked up and it started sprinkling. This is it!!! I did get some really great pictures of the clouds.

And then it got too windy to be outside. I was ready for it, but not nearly as brave as I had been before it got dark. All of our friends and family called to wish us well...or maybe goodbye and let us know that we were idiots to ride this thing out, in a kind way, though.=) I went outside and took one last cloud picture and then came inside to "hunker down" and eat dark chocolate peanut M&M's.

It didn't seem to be getting bad very fast, so about 10:45, we crawled into bed thinking that with a sound machine to drown out the noise, we would wake up Saturday morning, and it would all be over. Not so. At about 1:30 a.m. it really hit!! Windows sounded like they were bending, outside vents were popping, and debris was blowing around outside. Our tree was uprooted as were many in the neighborhood, plus all of the street signs and stop signs were either blown down, or totally bent at the ground. High line wires just outside of the neighborhood were blown down and we could watch bright flashes as one transformer after another was blown down. OK, so much for the experience. By 2:00 a.m. I was ready for it to end. I really thought we were going to lose a window or two. Rain water came in the front door. It wasn't flood water, but actually rain water being blown in. The electricity flickered off and on for several hours. I thought it was about as bad as it could get, and then at 4:00 a.m. the eye came through. Folks, I'm not kidding. That was some strong wind!! Finally, at around 6:00 a.m. things began to let up. It continued raining and the wind kept blowing, but we could tell that conditions were improving!! Yes, we were Hurricane Ike survivors. At that point, we crawled into bed, said a little prayer of thanksgiving, and went to sleep for an hour and a half (thanks Chandra for calling to check up on us!-) Actually, it is good to know that we are loved and everyone was concerned for our safety.

Thanks for all of your prayers and calls. If you have tried to call, my cell phone still won't work because the server is overloaded. I will try to talk to all of you as soon as possible. And, I won't be looking forward to a hurricane ever again...especially not one stronger than Ike, which was only a category 2!!??

Hard to Keep Up

Sorry I am not good at posting every day, or even every 2 or 3 days. Although it has been a very eventful week for me, I doubt it will be all that interesting for you...plus, no pictures.

We found that we have a place for R's mom down here. Problem is that R is very busy at work, and we have to go to Oklahoma this weekend to get her. Secondly, her place isn't going to be ready until next weekend. That's fine. We can keep her at our house, but her stuff won't fit into her storage unit, and we will have to rent a U Haul twice. We will have to rent one first for moving her down here, and again when we move her stuff out of her storage unit and our garage into her new apartment. This is still a good thing in that we are finally able to get her near so that we can keep a closer eye on her and she won't have to depend on others to help her out.

Next, I got a job with one of the local high school's conducting master classes once per week. I'm really excited, because it will get me in touch with possible students to teach private flute lessons. I have been missing my classes and lessons so much. I really enjoy the kids and I love my job. I don't think anyone has a job as fun and interesting as mine!! I will let you know how it goes after next Thursday.

Take care and have a great week. Hopefully, I won't take so long between posts again.

10 Things Tuesday

XBOX Wife Ten Things Tuesday

1. I'm thankful for my family because they love me even though I spend so much time trying to "fix them".

2. I'm thankful for my grandson who makes me laugh, love and see life through a 3 year old's eyes.

3. I'm thankful for my parent's who taught me right from wrong, and to love God with all of my heart.

4. I thankful that H's parents are teaching him right from wrong and to love God with all of his heart.

5. I'm thankful that even after 2 huge strokes and bleeding on his brain that my dad knows me and can communicate his feelings and love.

6. I'm thankful for my computer so that I can receive pictures of H whom I haven't been able to see since Christmas because they live so far away. (It was even better when their computer was working and I could visit with him on the webcam.)

7. I'm thankful that I live in the south and don't have to worry about cold winters.

8. I'm thankful for flowers that always bring smiles to my face even when I am sad.

9. I'm thankful for friends who love me unconditionally even when I don't write or call them enough. I hope they know that I think of them, love them, and pray for them often even though I don't tell them personally.

10. I'm thankful that I started blogging so that I could write a 10 Things Tuesday and remember all of the things that have blessed me this week.

No Dogs Please!

Disclaimer: I really do love dogs.

In spite of loving dogs, I really don't want another dog. In April, we had to put Rex, age 15, to sleep, which was one of the hardest things I have had to do. Our dogs just don't die of natural causes like they are supposed to. Fifteen years ago, we had to put KoKo, age 13, to sleep and so on. After almost 6 months, I am finally able to talk about Rex and remember the fun times when he was a healthy and happy young dog.

So, why do strays always show up on my porch??? I have rescued several in my lifetime and this one is a cutie. I don't want the pound to pick her up and I don't want her run over or starving to death. But, WHY DID SHE SHOW UP ON MY PORCH????

I think she likes me. In fact, I know she does. She can't wait for me to come outside to pet her. She really isn't all that hungry. She loves the cheese and the tortilla's I give her, but doesn't touch the dog food. Therefore, she has a home....but where are they?

She likes me and I like her. But, I really don't want a dog right now. I really, really don't. Please, owners read my signs and come claim your dog....before I get attached.

Hill Country

For our anniversary, Rocky took me on a weekend trip to Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country. I suppose you can tell that I am totally new to this blogging thing, because I didn't even take a single picture on the trip, even though I had my camera the whole time. I can tell you, though, that it was extremely relaxing and pleasant. We stayed in Kaden's Cottage at the Queen Anne Bed and Breakfast on Main Street. It was only blocks from all of the shopping, the room was cozy and breakfast was delicious!!

The only downside to the trip was that the Hill Country is experiencing a severe drought. The countryside was suffering, so it wasn't as pretty as it has been in previous trips. They were looking at some relief in the form of heavy rain as we were leaving. I'm glad they may be getting the rain, but I'm also glad it waited until after our trip.

The highlight of the trip was a concert on Friday night at the Rockbox Theater. I certainly would recommend this event to anyone visiting the Fredericksburg area. Great talent, funny and family friendly. No foul language or suggestive joking. It was great.

Since you took the time to read this otherwise boring blog for everyone but me, I will entertain you for a moment with a picture of "the kids". I know this is rather random, and not at all associated with my Fredericksburg trip, but a good picture nonetheless, don't you agree?

And, while I'm at it, I might as well send you one of my precious grandson, H.

Thanks again for indulging me.

Thirty-Five Years

It is 2:30 in the afternoon, and I have had workers in my house all day. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad thing. I just don't know what to do with my time while they are here. Do you go chat with them? Not me. Do you sit in a chair and read a book, write a letter or just watch soap operas? I'm not a letter writer or soap opera sort of girl, but I disapprove of sitting while they are working. I feel lazy just watching them sweat, but I can't help them. It's so frustrating. So, I find myself trying to look busy on the computer surfing the news stories on my home page.

One if them has been upstairs adding bookcases to the study. This is absolutely necessary because we have had numerous boxes of books waiting for their place in the house. Maybe we will be able to unpack them in the near future and finally be able to say that we are officially unpacked. Yes, we have lived here since the end of April.

The other worker is currently on the back porch adding a ceiling fan. The house came equipped with only 2 ceiling fans. We are adding 4 today. There will be hurricane force winds in this house from now on and maybe Rocky will finally be cool.

Saying all of this, nothing can stop the bigger meaning of today. Thirty-five years ago today I became Rocky's wife and it has been a great ride. I love you with all of my heart, Rocky, and can't wait for the next thirty-five. You are my lifelong best friend, companion and confidante. Thanks for putting up with me for so many years.

First Attempt

I have been watching my daughter blog for so long that I decided to try my hand at it. I'm really envious of all the acquaintances that she has been able to stay in touch with by blogging. I also love reading her blog and keeping up on pics of my favorite subject....my grandson.

We have moved from Oklahoma to Texas this summer and are adjusting to everything TEXAS, as in Aggies and Longhorns. I am a diehard OU fan and am looking forward to the beginning of Collegiate football.

So........let the season begin!!
